Coaching

Analysis is only useful if it changes what players do. This page covers how I coach: what I believe, how I lead, how I prepare a team and how I develop players.

  1. Coaching Philosophy

I coach principles, not positions. Players should understand why a behaviour helps the team so they can recognise the moment themselves.

I want teams that are brave with the ball, organised without it and quick to react in transition. The structure adapts to the players I have.

  2. Leadership Approach

Clear standards, consistent behaviour and honest feedback. Players should always know what is expected of them and why decisions are made.

  3. Player Development

Every player should leave a session with one thing they do better. Development goals are individual, linked to the player's position and their role in the game model.

  4. Training Methodology

Training starts from a match problem. I design exercises where that problem appears often, with constraints that make the right decision more likely.

See the Training Ground for session examples.

  5. Match Preparation

Opposition analysis is translated into a short plan: three or four key messages, rehearsed in the training week and supported with clips or diagrams.

  6. Communication

Short messages, shown rather than told. Video and diagrams for the team, one-to-one conversations for individual feedback.
